The great thing about Herbs is that they can be grown practically anywhere in the garden, but best in the sun. If grown in free draining soil, they will reward you with a delightful display of aromatic and colourful foliage. Little wonder that more and more of us want to start discovering the culinary delights of freshly cut Herbs direct from our own garden.

We are running out of top soil, there are to many environmental problems to count and there is a serious lack of nutrition left in the soil. Worms may be the answer that we have been looking for. That’s right I said worms, it seems that scientists have been testing this theory in a laboratory and have now approved of this new technique to composting.

The Christmas cactus is easy to grow, but it is difficult to get it to bloom. To be certain of a healthy plant there are some things you should know about the plant to help its blooming process. Medium light and a soil high in organic matter such as cow manure, wood ashes, leaf mold, garden loam and clean coarse sand (not beach sand) will make the ideal soil for your cactus.

When cultivating orchids, it is very important to have the right potting medium. You can’t just go outside and dig up some dirt to put in your orchid pot-you have to provide the growing plant with the correct mix of nutrients it needs to thrive successfully, and this almost always means going out and finding a specially designed orchid mix variety of potting soil. You can purchase this orchid mix, along with many other specifically designed pre-formulated soil mixes for a large variety of different plants and growing conditions at your local garden supply store.

Sandy soils have almost the opposite problems of clay soils. That would stand to reason, as clay soils are made up of very small particles and sandy soils have larger particles. Particle size makes a huge difference in the way water, air and nutrients move through the soil.

Vermicompost is a great way to add nutrients back to your soil. Overtime your plants will deplete the soil of the nutrients they need to survive, and vermicomposting is the best way to ensure that the soil is good for your plants.

Indoor gardening is very popular, and especially so for growing food in inhospitable climates or where soil is poor or not available. If you are trying to grow food indoors, you will want to grow it organically.
